DIR: Javi and David enter the medical center. As with the rest of Richmond, the facility is top drawer.
DIR: Gabe pops out of his seat to greet them.
Hey!
Hey, kid. Got everything you need?
Uh, yeah. This place is like the Hilton.
[ALT] Uh, yeah. This place is like a resort.
[PICKUP1] Check it out, Javi -- noodles in a cup!
We need to get you some real food, stat.
Turn you into a soldier.
DIR: David tussles Gabe's hair, puts up his fists and starts play-fighting with Gabe.
DIR: Javi goes to Kate's side. She smiles at the sight of him.
Javi... I’m glad you’re okay.
DIR: Javi smiles warmly, pleased to see her.
DIR: The exchange a silent look, a subtle expession of solidarity. We're in this together.
DIR: Gabe shrieks happily as he playfights with his dad.
DIR: Kate can't hide her CONCERN. Gabe's bonding with his father clearly makes her uncomfortable.
DIR: David notices this out of the side of his eye and releases his hold on Gabe, who remains flushed and happy.
DIR: David walks up to the opposite side of Kate's bed, leans in, and kisses her on the cheek tenderly. Gabe joins him at the foot of the bed.
Damn it’s good to have you back. Look at this family.
Look at my wife.
DIR: He puts a hand on Kate's shoulder and turns to Javi.
Isn’t she the most beautiful woman alive?
DIR: Gabe glances at Javi. How's this going to pan out?
DIR: Kate suddenly writhes in agony. She darts up, sitting up even further and putting her hands over her bullet wound.
DIR: David is alarmed.
[alarmed] What? You okay?!
[agony; worse] Aggh! Arrggh! My...
DIR: She gestures at her wound.
Shit. I’ll get the doc!
DIR: He runs out of the room, Gabe close on his heels.
DIR: Javi turns to follow, but Kate reaches out and takes his hand.
DIR: The minute David and Gabe are out of the room, Kate's agony vanishes. She's faking. She pulls Javi close, whispering conspiratorially.
I’m fine... I just needed to talk to you. Alone.
DIR: Javi glances quickly over his shoulder. The door is open to the hall.
DIR: Javi takes her hand in his, to comfort her. She fights back tears --
I’m scared, Javi.
[trying not to cry] More than I was the whole time on the road.
[trying not to cry] Even when I thought I was going to die.
Everything inside me screams to get away from here.
DIR: Javi breaks eye contact with Kate for a moment.
Let’s just get you better, Kate. The facilities here --
I don’t care about facilities. We did fine without them before.
You didn’t have a ruptured spleen before.
These people nearly killed me, Javi! David’s people!
DIR: Kate leans forward, stares Javi directly in the eye --
Have you forgotten Mari?
Of course not.
I’ll find a way, Kate. You have my word.
DIR: Javi slowly releases Kate's hand, lays it gently down.
Rest up. You’re gonna need your strength.
DIR: Kate smiles, relieved.
Thanks. I feel better... knowing we’re in this together.
DIR: But her anxiety returns.
But please hurry. I-- I don’t want to be left alone here.
I hear you, Kate. But we can’t just turn our backs on this place. On my brother.
[pleading] Javi...
DIR: Javi slowly releases Kate's hand, lays it gently down.
We have to try to make it work.
DIR: Kate deflates. She turns away from Javi.
[dismay; barbed] I used to say that about my fucked-up marriage.
Guess it still applies.
[PICKUP1] Whatever. Just, please -- please don’t leave me alone for too long.
DIR: Javi responds to the room, turning away from David and redirecting to Doc Lingard.
She was rambling a bit.
I think she’s delirious.
DIR: The Doctor examines her with a stethoscope.
Well, she seems cogent now. But it’s nothing to be alarmed about.
Pain often comes in waves with abdominal wounds.
DIR: Javi notices David watching him out of the corner of his eye. It's not warm. He holds the look for a moment before redirecting his attention to Lingard.
Hm.
I think she pulled her stitches when she sat up.
[sneering] Her stitches?
DIR: The doctor frowns, examining her with his stethoscope.
I doubt it. But pain often comes in waves with abdominal wounds.
DIR: Javi notices David watching him out of the corner of his eye. It's not warm. He holds the look for a moment before redirecting his attention to Lingard.
Hm.
I’ll give you something to take the edge off. In case it comes back.
DIR: She nods her thanks. Doctor examines the stitching.
Truly superlative work.
[PICKUP1] I thought I’d have to operate, but all she needed was IV fluids and some antibiotics.
DIR: He glances up.
How did you find someone with skills like these?
I need medics who work miracles in the field.
DIR: David turns to Kate and leans in.
[PICKUP1] Javi and I have to go meet some people now. See if we can’t prove he’s worth a damn.
DIR: He gives her a farewell kiss on the forehead.
We’re gonna take real good care of you, okay?
DIR: Kate nods through gritted teeth.
[PICKUP1] Send my apologies, David. I won’t be able to make it.
DIR: David tries to read him -- we won't know this but he's trying to see if Lingard is high.
[PICKUP1] Feeling okay?
[PICKUP1] [assuring] Fine. I just want to keep an eye on my patient.
[PICKUP1] The others know my vote is with you.
[PICKUP1] [ALT] The others know I wouldn’t vote against your brother.
DIR: David nods, accepting the reasoning.
[to Javi] C’mon.
DIR: Javi and David walk out into the hallway. David stops Javi as he closes the door.
Remember what I said.
When we meet these guys, keep what happened to Mariana to yourself.
Badger is one of my guys -- and I will handle him.
DIR: David gestures for Javi to follow him and starts walking out of the medical center. Javi stops in front of the window, takes a final look at Kate, who's settling back in, then walks out of frame.
DIR: End Scene.
DIR: A large, colonial era church with grandiose architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows.
DIR: David leads Javi down the aisle, between the pews and he looks around, soaking in both the church's rustic beauty and the New Frontier iconography that has come to replace it.
DIR: They approach the front of the church and David stops at the end of the pews, Javi right behind him.
[distant] It may look pretty, but it’s all sugars. There’s no substance.
[distant] It tastes pretty, Clint. That’s all that matters.
DIR: The other leaders of the New Frontier, CLINT (30's) and JOAN (40's), stand by the table, bickering gently and almost indecipherably about the cake.
DIR: They look up as Javi and David approach.
DIR: They should feel pretty welcoming at this point, with Joan being particularly inviting.
Ah! The brother.
DIR: Clint and Joan size Javi up. Clint seems suspicious, but Joan smiles.
Javi. Meet the guys.
DIR: David takes a few steps towards Joan and Clint, presenting them.
DIR: Javi keeps his distance, closer to the pews.
Clint runs food production. The crops you saw, that’s him and his people.
Joan’s our bridge to the outside world. She handles contact with other settlements.
Pleased to meet you, Javi.
I trust you’ve been treated well?
DIR: Clint grunts and turns his back on Javi in order to serve himself dinner.
[skeptical grunt]
We were just about to eat.
DIR: Joan presents the food on the table to Javi.
Clint was trying to convince me of the essential superiority of his creamed spinach over my magnificent black forest gateau.
It’s no contest. The spinach has real nutritional value.
Javi, take a look at that table.
DIR: Javi looks at the table. Joan's cake is splendid. Clint's spinach looks like green sludge. But still, it's a fresh vegetable...
You tell me what you’d rather put in your belly.
DIR: Clint looks up. He watches Javi intently, waiting for his answer.
DIR: Joan gestures to the pews across the room.
DIR: She and Clint start moving towards the chairs sitting across from them.
[PICKUP2] Please, make yourself comfortable.
We value straight talk here, so please -- forgive me if I seem direct.
DIR: They all settle into their seats. David makes a point to sit next to Javi so that he can watch him closely. He shoots Javi a not-so-subtle side-eye as he sits to reiterate that.
We’re usually pretty strict about who we open our doors to.
Your brother’s word counts for a lot.
DIR: Javi looks over at David, who nods.
Is that so?
The three of us, and Doctor Lingard, make all the decisions here. So, yeah.
DIR: She smiles.
People who choose to stay with us, they have to deal with us bossing them around.
Not saying you wouldn’t but, it can be an adjustment.
No offense, but what qualifies you to lead?
DIR: Clint narrows his eyes in minor offense.
DIR: Joan smiles. She's obviously an experienced diplomat, brushing off Javi's aggression.
Testing us already?
Just curious who’s leading the troops into battle.
Everything you see, we built ourselves.
If that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is.
[PICKUP2][ALT] That’s the only endorsement we’ve got.
When Joan and I met your brother he was trying his hand at fruit.
DIR: Javier is surprised.
DIR: Chris, please trim as you think best. Lots of little lines that could go.
Fruit?
We found him slowly murdering an orchard on the Shenandoah River.
Ha-dee-fucking-hah.
I helped him bring it back to life.
[PICKUP2] We had a good run there.
DIR: David grimaces.
For as long as it lasted.
What happened?
What always happens? We trusted the wrong damn people.
DIR: He pulls his collar down and indicates the brand on his neck.
That’s what led us to start this.
DIR: Javi raises an eyebrow taking one last look at the painful brand on his brother's neck.
DIR: Joan notices this and speaks up.
[PICKUP2] It was a crude answer to a difficult problem, and it hasn’t always worked.
[PICKUP2] Please understand...
We had a terrible winter just after we moved here.
DIR: She smiles sadly.
We... we lost a great deal.
DIR: She glances over at Clint, who clenches his jaw at a painful memory.
Loved ones who left holes in our lives.
Protecting my people from that kind of pain -- that’s what keeps me awake at night.
DIR: Javi takes a moment to let Joan's emotions sit in - he watches her empathetically (this is a small moment, a reaction shot of Javi letting the weight of Joan's words resonate). This moment's interrupted when --
DIR: The door swings open with a loud bang, causing everyone to turn towards it.
DIR: MAX enters, looking sheepish. He's followed by an armed GUARD, who seems to be more escorting Max than forcing him to be here. Javi's eyes narrow. David is suddenly on edge.
DIR: David stands, puts a hand on Javi's shoulder to stop him from doing the same.
Max!? What are you doing here?
DIR: David's brow creases.
DIR: Max lands at the front of the aisle, right next to where Javi's sitting. He squirms. He's clearly not feeling so comfortable being here.
I sent for him.
Since when does he answer to you?
From what I hear, he’s well acquainted with your brother.
They exchanged a few bullets outside our walls.
DIR: Joan frowns at Javi.
Is that right? There’s bad blood between you and Max?
DIR: Javi tries to downplay their conflict.
DIR: He avoids eye contact with Max, stays focused on Joan and Clint.
[forced] I don’t have a problem with him.
[forced] He’s all right by me.
DIR: David, Joan and Clint look to Max. He's confused, to say the least, but also slightly relieved.
[forced] Yeah. Same here.
DIR: Joan studies Max's body language, looks back at Javi, confrontationally.
DIR: She takes a moment to assess the dynamic, then speaks up.
I don’t buy it.
Max, how did this start?
DIR: Max clamps his mouth shut. He glances at David, anxious to speak.
DIR: David and Javi eye him back with a glare.
Don’t look at him.
DIR: Max squirms. He's hesitant.
DIR: He walks over to the buffet table, takes a lean, putting some distance between himself and the Garcias.
DIR: Clint stares at Max, demanding an answer. Joan also watches closely.
You have an obligation to tell the truth.
DIR: Max nods, averts his eyes from David.
[reluctant] We caught him siphoning gas from one of our vehicles.
[warning] Max...
DIR: He turns to David, avoiding eye contact like a child whose done wrong.
Sorry, David.
I know he’s family, but your brother’s a thief.
DIR: Everyone turns to Javi.
Is it true?
DIR: David looks at Javi, slowly sitting down while keeping his eyes focused on his brother.
DIR: Javi is speechless.
DIR: Clint shakes his head -- "Unbelievable."
DIR: David glares at Javi.
DIR: Joan stares silently ahead at Javi, judging him at what feels like point blank. There's no malice to her expression, just objective disappointment. Like an elementary school principal.
DIR: Javi notices this, but Joan doesn't avert her eyes.
DIR: Javi sits up straighter as he speaks. If they want a fight, they're going to get a fight.
Let’s judge you, then. You’ve got some colorful friends.
DIR: Max flushes. David sees where this is going -- he interjects, steering the conversation away --
So what if Javi met up with Clementine? It doesn’t mean anything!
We kicked her out for a reason, David.
Now the two of ‘em are thick as thieves.
DIR: Joan sits back into her chair, rests her arms on her arm rest as her death stare of Javi becomes more stern.
DIR: Clint glares at David.
DIR: Joan's accusational stare follows Clint's words to David.
This is who you’re asking us to vouch for, David? Seriously?
DIR: David glowers, at a loss for words.
DIR: Javi stands up abruptly.
One of your people -- some asshole called Badger -- he put a bullet in a little girl.
My niece. David’s daughter.
DIR: Max's eyes widen. David is pissed.
DIR: David tries to pull Javi down, back onto the pew, but Javi fights his arm away.
What?!
DIR: David stands up quickly, gets in his face like a drill sergeant.
Damn it, Javi. I told you I’d handle it!
DIR: Joan is horrified.
No, David! This cousin-fucking dirtbag has the balls to accuse me?
[ALT] [PICKUP1] No, David. This dirtbag has the balls to accuse me?
He and Badger destroyed an entire town!
That’s enough!
DIR: David pulls Javi back down onto the pew, sitting himself back down in the process.
DIR: Javi shakes his grip off once again.
DIR: Clint takes a few steps further towards the Garcias, glaring briefly at Max as he moves.
No! We need to hear this.
They killed a hostage in cold blood. A woman, Francine.
DIR: Max pleads more to Joan, David and Clint than Javi.
Badger did that, not me!
You were right there next to him!
I tried to get him to stop, I swear....
Cut off her damn finger first.
Max?!
I tried to stop him, I swear! He was out of control.
Eh, it’s clear your brother doesn’t belong here. Javi and his people have to go.
DIR: David stands quickly.
You’re overreacting! It was a scuffle over supplies --
Eh, we’ve exiled people for less.
DIR: David looks to Joan for support.
Sorry, David, your soldiers are already wild enough.
We can’t add more crazy to the mix.
DIR: Clint signals to the Guard.
[to Guard] Take Javi and everyone in quarantine to the gate.
Give ‘em a pack with the bare minimum to survive.
David, we’ve warned you about getting your soldiers in line.
DIR: She shakes her head in dismay.
DIR: David stands quickly.
We don’t know all the facts--
We know enough!
She’s right, David. You’ve lost control.
DIR: David glowers at Javi. He slumps in defeat. Joan glares at Javi.
I want them gone. All of them.
DIR: Joan signals to the Guard.
Take Javi and everyone in the quarantine to the gate.
Send them out with enough weapons to defend themselves, but no more.
DIR: The Guard approaches Javi with his hand on his gun.
DIR: Javi stands, ready to defend himself.
DIR: The Guard glances to Joan, who waves him down and shakes her head -- let's see how this plays out first.
DIR: Javi looks to David for a sign of what to do next.
DIR: David's eyes narrow for a second, as if he's about to resist, but then he slumps, feigning resignation. It seems like he has a plan. He leans in close to Javi.
[hushed] Look, we can’t fight this. Not now.
Kate and Gabe will be safe here. Your doctor friend, too. But the rest of you...
DIR: Javi looks from David to Joan and Clint. They're all watching him, waiting to see what happens next.
Just stay alive, okay?
DIR: The Guard grabs Javi by the arm and starts escorting him towards the church's exit.
DIR: Javi looks back and sees David watching him with heavy eyes. He turns to face Joan and Clint, who are ready to have a much more serious and stern conversation.
DIR: Javi's escorted off frame.
